My roommate drove me to a hardware store today and I picked up some materials to make a chi ishi and an ishi sashi. They didn't carry the little disposable painting containers so I bought a five gallon one, put some concrete in the base of it, had a dowel cut into three pieces at the store, nailed four nails into the end of it (used a dumbbell) and stuck it in the bottom of the bucket. For constructing the ishi sashi I'm using an empty paint can (I got the idea from Michael Clarke's book on hojo undo), and smaller piece of towel, to make the holes I used a nail and my leatherman, it was way easier than I expected it to be, I'll be making another one this week, and at least one more chi ishi, eventually I'll be making at least two more. I also ordered a weight vest on Ebay, I wasn't planning on it but there was good deal, 60lb adjustable weight vest for 74$ with free shipping. I've never owned a weight vest, but I'm excited about it, when I trained at the gym in NH I used the weight vest every time.
I was talking to my roommate about setting up a makiwara, he thinks that if we made holes in the porch they wouldn't be hard to conceal after we leave, we're going to look at the color of the concrete tomorrow, but he's confident we'll figure something out.
It's late, time for bed. More later!

sounds like you are starting to have some fun :) A couple of my chishi are made from round weight plates from old barbell set [2.5, 5, 10kg] with dowel stuck in, took about 5 seconds to make, just hit the wood in the hole & no mess. I will email you a picture. Keep it up & good luck with getting that makiwara. Tig
ReplyDeleteOh good idea! So they just stay in by friction then? Yea that'd be sweet if you could e-mail it.
